Durham County Schools and Person County Public Schools may open as early as the Monday closest to August 10, instead of the statewide requirement of the Monday closest to August 26

Eliminates the "good cause" waiver process that previously allowed schools to open as early as August 19 only after demonstrating a history of emergency closures (8 days per year in 4 of the last 10 years)

Permits local boards with school calendars ending the fall semester before December 31 to administer state assessments and final exams prior to the semester's conclusion

Applies exclusively to Durham County Schools and Person County Public Schools, beginning with the 2025-2026 school year
