North Carolina General Assembly urges U.S. Congress to enact federal legislation admitting Washington, D.C. as the 51st state

D.C.'s population of approximately 689,545 residents exceeds Wyoming (576,851) and Vermont (643,077), and D.C. residents pay more federal taxes than residents of 22 states

D.C. residents voted 86% in favor of statehood in a November 8, 2016 referendum but currently lack voting representation in Congress despite having had voting rights removed by the Organic Act of 1801

Secretary of State directed to transmit copies of the resolution to North Carolina's congressional delegation and to the Clerk of the U.S. House and Secretary of the U.S. Senate

Resolution is effective upon ratification by both chambers of the North Carolina General Assembly
