U.S. citizens 18 years or older may carry a concealed handgun in North Carolina without a permit, effective December 1, 2025

Persons carrying concealed must carry valid identification and disclose to law enforcement when approached or addressed by an officer

Concealed carry remains prohibited in law enforcement/correctional facilities, areas banned by federal law, Legislative Building areas, and private premises with posted notices; violations are infractions with fines up to $500

Prohibited persons include felons, those under felony indictment, fugitives, unlawful drug/alcohol users, persons adjudicated mentally ill, those dishonorably discharged, and those convicted of certain violent misdemeanors

The existing concealed handgun permit system continues for reciprocity purposes when traveling to other states or for other reasons desired by permit holders
