Vehicle owners may elect their preferred registration renewal month when initially registering a vehicle with a non-calendar-year plate, choosing any month within 12 months of issuance

Initial registration fees for periods less than one year are prorated at one-twelfth of the annual fee multiplied by the number of full months until expiration, rounded to the nearest dollar

Property taxes on vehicles are similarly prorated for owners who elect an initial registration period of less than one year

The Division of Motor Vehicles may send renewal notices electronically to vehicle owners who provide written consent and an email address

Effective January 1, 2026, applying to all vehicle registration applications submitted on or after that date
