Full-time state employees would receive up to 40 hours of paid bereavement leave for the death of an immediate family member and up to 8 hours for the death of a colleague

Immediate family includes spouse, parent, child, sibling, grandparent, grandchild, dependent living in household, and extends to step, half, adoptive, foster, in-law, and legal ward relationships

Employees are eligible immediately upon hire with no annual limit on usage; leave for an immediate family member must be used within 180 days of death and does not require consecutive days

Applies to state agency employees, UNC system employees, public school employees, and community college employees; part-time employees receive prorated amounts

Appropriates $2 million per year for the 2025-2027 fiscal biennium from the General Fund, effective July 1, 2025
