Local school boards must adopt internet safety policies by January 1, 2026, requiring age-appropriate content filters, student data protection, and blocking of social media platforms except when directed by teachers for educational purposes.

Schools must provide instruction on social media and mental health effects once in elementary school, once in middle school, and twice in high school, beginning with the 2026-2027 school year.

Public school units must establish policies by January 1, 2026 prohibiting students from using, displaying, or having wireless communication devices turned on during instructional time, with exceptions for teacher authorization, IEPs, Section 504 plans, and documented medical conditions.

Certain nonpublic schools approved by DPI to provide special education services may now request residency licenses for teachers enrolled in educator preparation programs.

Schools with accreditation suspended for at least four years by the Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission may apply for reaccreditation after two years of suspension.
