Upgrades assault on school employees or volunteers from a Class A1 misdemeanor to a Class I felony when the assault occurs while they are performing their duties or as a result of their duties

Covered employees include staff of local school boards, charter schools, and nonpublic schools, as well as independent contractors performing school duties and supervised adult volunteers

Protected duties encompass all activities on school property, school-authorized events, accompanying students to/from events, and school transportation operations

School personnel who take reasonable good-faith actions to end student fights retain immunity from civil and criminal liability

Effective December 1, 2025, applying to offenses committed on or after that date
