Law enforcement officers who observe another officer using excessive force must intervene if safe to do so and report the incident to a superior within 72 hours

Officers who report excessive force or other violations of law, rules, or regulations are protected from termination, discipline, or retaliation by their employers

If the agency head was involved in or present during the alleged excessive force, the report must be made to the highest-ranking officer not involved in the incident

Making a knowingly false report under these provisions constitutes a Class 2 misdemeanor

Effective December 1, 2025, applying to offenses and retaliatory actions occurring on or after that date
