Pitt County Schools and Edgecombe County Schools may set their own school opening and closing dates, bypassing standard state calendar requirements under G.S. 115C-84.2(d)

Local boards must hold two public hearings before changing calendar dates: one to decide whether to depart from state requirements, and a second to determine specific dates based on parent and community input

Both school boards must report to the Department of Public Instruction by October 15, 2025 on implementation effects, student achievement impacts, and recommendations for modification or expansion

Department of Public Instruction must forward reports to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee by November 1, 2025

Flexibility applies only for the 2025-2026, 2026-2027, and 2027-2028 school years
