Children must reach age five before August first to enroll in kindergarten, unless they will be five before December first and demonstrate superior academic abilities, talents, or abilities and social and emotional readiness through approved screening instruments.

School districts may enroll children under the age five cutoff in kindergarten if the child will turn five before December first and has completed an approved kindergarten program at another school.

Kindergarten teachers must be licensed or approved by the education standards and practices board.

School districts operating kindergarten must submit to the superintendent of public instruction and follow a developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Kindergarten programs must provide at least 30 full days of instruction on a half-day or full-day basis as determined by the school board and must comply with all municipal and state health, fire, and safety requirements.
