The presiding judge of a judicial district may appoint one or more referees to serve on a full-time or part-time basis, with salary provided within legislative appropriation limits.

The presiding judge may assign referees to preside in cases under chapters 12.1-31.2, title 14, sections 20.1-01-28 and 20.1-01-29, chapter 27-20, chapter 28-25, subsection 6 of section 50-09-08.6, and subsection 2 of section 50-09-14, in accordance with supreme court rules.

The supreme court may promulgate rules governing referee qualifications, authority assignment by the presiding judge, procedures, office conduct, training sessions, and continuing education requirements.
