County boards of commissioners may appropriate up to $5,000 annually from the general fund to county historical societies for collection, preservation, and publication of historical materials.

County boards may levy a property tax not exceeding three-quarters of one mill for historical work if approved by 60 percent of qualified electors voting on the question.

State historical society shall provide matching funds to eligible counties equal to up to 50 percent of the amount levied in dollars, but only on levies up to three-quarters of one mill, with grants distributed by March 1 annually.

Counties must submit written grant requests and reports to the state historical society by February 1 annually to qualify for matching funds and document use of previous grant funds.

$1,200,000 is appropriated to the state historical society for the biennium beginning July 1, 2013, and ending June 30, 2015, to provide matching funds for county historical work.
