HB 1045 Summary

• All postsecondary educational institutions and career schools must be accredited by national or regional accrediting agencies recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

• New institutions may receive provisional annual authorization to operate until achieving accreditation, provided they demonstrate substantial good-faith progress toward that status.

• Institutions must give written notification to the board within 30 days of any change to their accreditation status.

• Postsecondary institutions and career schools must notify prospective and enrolled students in writing about whether their courses or programs comply with professional registration and certification requirements of the appropriate state professional boards.

• An exception exempts career schools that do not grant degrees and offer mainly hands-on training in low census occupations from accreditation requirements.
