Personalized license plates may contain up to seven numerals, letters, or ampersands with an additional fee of $25 per registration period, except gold star and prisoner of war plates which have no additional charge.

Personalized plates matching a registrant's previously issued standard plate require a one-time fee of $100 and are exempt from the $25 annual registration fee.

Personalized plates are available for motor vehicles, trailers, travel trailers, and motorcycles; motorcycle plates are limited to six characters; vehicles registered under section 39-04-10.6 pay a one-time $100 fee.

Upon vehicle sale or transfer, owners must remove personalized plates per section 39-04-36, but may transfer the plates to a replacement vehicle upon payment of the applicable transfer fee.

The department of transportation shall reduce the $100 one-time fee by any $25 specialized plate fees paid by registrants in 2016 and 2017, effective January 1, 2018.
