Noncommercial operator's licenses expire every three years for individuals under 78 years of age, and every two years for those 78 years or older, based on whether birth year ends in odd or even numerals.

Individuals with valid nonimmigrant visas, pending asylum applications, temporary protected status, deferred action status, or pending permanent residence applications receive temporary operator's licenses valid for the duration of authorized stay or one year, renewable upon proof of status extension.

Noncommercial applicants may apply by mail or electronically for renewal during every other renewal cycle if under 65 years of age, using vision information they provide instead of requiring in-person examination.

Applicants renewing one or more years after license expiration must be treated as initial applicants, except those whose military service terminated less than 30 days prior to application.
