SB 2136 Summary

• Requires public and nonpublic high schools to make available one-half unit of elective instruction on either the Old Testament, New Testament, or both testaments of the Bible as part of required coursework.

• Allows students to fulfill this Bible instruction requirement through any delivery method permitted under state law, including classroom instruction, distance learning, interactive video, computer instruction, or correspondence courses.

• Permits schools to substitute Bible studies for up to one-half unit of the three required social studies units for high school graduation purposes.

• Maintains all existing high school curriculum requirements while adding Bible instruction as an elective option rather than a mandatory course.
