SB 2341 Summary

• Amends Section 54-60-17 to establish the Division of Workforce Development's administration of internships, apprenticeships, and work experience programs with primary focus on higher education internships in target industries and apprenticeship training programs.

• Modifies Section 54-60-17.1 to clarify that the internship fund is a continuing appropriation to the Department of Commerce for implementing and administering apprenticeship programs and related internship initiatives.

• Creates a new apprenticeship training program under Section 54-60 defining apprentices as individuals at least 16 years old employed in apprenticeable occupations, registered with the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Apprenticeship, and state residents.

• Authorizes the Division of Workforce Development, in consultation with the Director of Career and Technical Education, to develop and implement an apprenticeship training program including providing training grants to apprenticeship sponsors and educating students about apprenticeship opportunities.

• Permits apprenticeship sponsors and lead apprenticeship sponsors to apply for training grants from the Division of Workforce Development, with funds required to be used for conducting and maintaining apprenticeship programs.
