Governor shall appoint a state artist laureate by August 1st of each odd-numbered year to serve a two-year term, who must be a North Dakota resident recognized in literary, visual arts, cultural, education, or academic communities with a significant record of published or documented work.

State artist laureate shall participate in public engagement events across the state and may apply for reimbursement of up to $1,000 per event from the council on the arts, with a maximum annual reimbursement of $5,000.

The state artist laureate position replaces the state poet laureate position previously established by Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 4039.

$10,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the council on the arts for the biennium beginning July 1, 2021, and ending June 30, 2023, to reimburse the state artist laureate for public engagement events.
