Organizations cannot pay for opioid therapy exceeding 90 morphine milligram equivalents per day or more than a 7-day supply in a single outpatient transaction during the initial 30-day period of opioid therapy.

Opioid therapy limits do not apply to cancer treatment, end-of-life care, hospice care, substance use disorder treatment, emergency room settings, inpatient hospital settings, long-term care facilities, or assisted living facilities.

Organizations cannot pay for benzodiazepine therapy beyond 4 weeks cumulative duration, except when approved for anxiety disorder treatment.

Organizations cannot pay for concurrent combination therapies that include both opioid and benzodiazepine controlled substances.

Injured employees exceeding therapy limits on the effective date must comply with new limits by July 1, 2022, at which time the organization must terminate coverage for any therapy exceeding the limits.
