Drivers may not operate motor vehicles designed for fewer than eleven passengers on highways unless each front seat occupant is wearing a properly adjusted and fastened safety belt.

The safety belt requirement does not apply to drivers or occupants eighteen years of age or older.

Exemptions from the safety belt requirement include children in proper child restraints, farm vehicle operators, rural mail carriers on duty, persons with medical conditions preventing restraint (with qualified physician documentation), and situations where all front seat belts are in use.

Medical professionals providing good faith statements that safety belt restraint would be inappropriate are immune from civil liability.

Safety belt violations are not admissible as evidence of negligence in any proceeding except those charging the violation itself.
