Department of Transportation shall conduct a study and pilot projects during the 2021-22 interim on the feasibility and impact of long combination vehicle operations on North Dakota roadways.

Study must assess federal regulations on long combination vehicles, economic impact, effects on bridges and structures, compatible road networks, safety guidelines, implementation costs, and review size and weight provisions under chapter 39-12.

Long combination vehicle configurations in pilot projects cannot exceed 130 feet of cargo carrying capacity unless approved by the Department of Transportation director.

Director may waive certain statutory size and weight restrictions for pilot projects, and local road authorities must agree in writing to address traffic safety and costs if pilot projects operate on county, city, or township roads.

Department of Transportation shall report findings and recommendations, including any required legislation, to legislative management by August 1, 2022.
