SB2186 Summary

• Removes the "unsupervised contact with students" condition from criminal history background check requirements for school district, special education unit, career and technology center, and regional education association applicants and service providers.

• Adds a definition of "unsupervised contact" with students as being in proximity to one or more students on school grounds or at school functions outside the presence of an individual who has been subject to a criminal history record check.

• Expands criminal history background check requirements for public school employees by removing the restriction that checks only apply to those hired after June 30, 2011 with unsupervised contact.

• Expands criminal history background check requirements for nonpublic school employees by removing the restriction that checks only apply to those hired after June 30, 2011 with unsupervised contact.

• Maintains requirement that employing boards and schools are responsible for paying all costs associated with obtaining criminal history background checks.
