HB 1471 Summary

• Creates a food insecurity task force with nine members including the department director, superintendent of public instruction, commerce commissioner, Indian affairs director, agriculture commissioner, two legislators, and two nonprofit representatives serving food insecurity populations.

• Task force shall develop and update a statewide plan for addressing food insecurity and submit reports to legislative management before July 1st of each even-numbered year.

• Plan must address access to supplemental nutrition assistance programs, food education, barriers for seniors, child nutrition programs, community and faith-based food assistance, affordable and culturally appropriate food, identification of food-insecure communities, and economic security.

• Task force elects its own presiding officer and meets at the chairman's call, with the department providing administrative services.

• Defines "food insecurity" as the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways.
