• Courts may not award permanent spousal support and must require express findings that the recipient lacks sufficient property or income and the payor has ability to pay without undue hardship before awarding limited-term support.

• Spousal support duration is limited based on marriage length: up to 50% for marriages under 5 years, 60% for 5-10 years, 70% for 10-15 years, 80% for 15-20 years, and duration agreed by parties for 20+ years, except upon written court findings requiring deviation.

• Courts may award three types of support: rehabilitative support to restore earning capacity, general term support when rehabilitation is not possible, or lump sum support as additional marital property.

• Spousal support terminates upon remarriage or death of the recipient unless parties agree otherwise; a rebuttable presumption exists that support terminates when the payor reaches full retirement age for social security purposes.

• Act applies to all spousal support orders regardless of issuance date, but only affects payments accruing after the effective date.
