Authorizes pharmacists to dispense emergency refills of up to a 30-day supply (or the most recent refill amount, whichever is less) when refill authorization has expired and the prescribing practitioner cannot be readily reached

Emergency refills are limited to maintenance medications that are not controlled substances

Pharmacists must use their professional judgment to determine that interrupting therapy could produce undesirable consequences or be detrimental to the patient's welfare

Prescription information for emergency refills may be obtained from a prescription label, pharmacy records, or a common database
