Joe Edmonson posthumously received the 2024 Bobby Douglas Legacy Award, which recognizes significant contributions to the Black wrestling community

In 1964, Edmonson became a quadriplegic after a trampoline accident and was given only ten years to live, yet in 1968 he started his own wrestling program while earning his master's degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha

Edmonson developed the nationally respected Exploradories program and ran the Edmonson Youth Outreach Center at the YMCA to mentor inner-city youth and teach wrestling

Awards include USA Wrestling's 1985 Kids Person of the Year, Point of Light from President George H.W. Bush in 1991, and induction into the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1994

The Legislature congratulates Edmonson and his family and directs a copy of the resolution be sent to the family
