Honors Alan Bartlett Shepard, born November 18, 1923 in East Derry, New Hampshire, who graduated from Pinkerton Academy and the U.S. Naval Academy

Recognizes Shepard as the first American to fly into space on the Mercury 7 mission on May 5, 1961

Commemorates Shepard's role as Apollo 14 mission commander, during which he became one of only 12 people to walk on the moon

Notes Shepard retired from the U.S. Navy in 1974 as a rear admiral and helped found the Mercury 7 scholarships for students
