Motor vehicle leases signed in New Jersey may be terminated early upon a lessee's death without any early termination fee being charged by the dealer or lessor

Dealers and lessors cannot require a deceased lessee's surviving spouse, family member, guardian, or estate administrator to purchase the vehicle, buy out the lease, or continue the lease

A death certificate or satisfactory proof of death must be provided to the dealer or lessor within 60 days of the lessee's death, and the lease terminates upon return of the vehicle

Dealers and lessors may still charge reasonable fees for excess wear, use, or mileage as specified in the original lease agreement

Lease contracts must include written disclosure of the early termination right upon death, with a $500 penalty for dealers or lessors who fail to provide this disclosure
