Increases the criminal penalty for catalytic converter theft by one degree higher than the underlying theft offense would normally be graded

Theft normally graded as a disorderly persons offense (under $200) would become a fourth degree crime if the stolen property is a catalytic converter

Theft normally graded as a fourth degree crime ($200-$500) would become a third degree crime for catalytic converter theft

Theft normally graded as a third degree crime ($500-$75,000) would become a second degree crime for catalytic converter theft

The bill takes effect immediately upon enactment
