Requires all vehicle manufacturers selling in New Jersey to stamp or engrave the vehicle identification number (VIN) onto each catalytic converter installed in motor vehicles sold in the state

Takes effect on the first day of the third month following enactment

Addresses the dramatic increase in catalytic converter thefts, which rose from approximately 3,400 claims in 2019 to more than triple that number in 2020 according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau

Aims to deter theft by making stolen catalytic converters traceable and less attractive to scrap yards and thieves
