Members of the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) may purchase up to one year of service credit for time spent as an Eagleton Science and Politics Fellow at Rutgers University's Eagleton Institute of Politics

The member must pay all contributions required for the service credit purchase, with no liability for the employer; payment can be made in a lump sum or monthly installments

Members must submit a statement of service signed and attested by the Director of the Eagleton Institute of Politics detailing their time and nature of service in the fellowship

The purchase is prohibited if the member already has vested retirement benefits in another system based on that fellowship service

Members who retire before completing payments receive pro rata credit, but may make a lump sum payment at retirement to receive full credit
