Heirs or legatees must possess a valid permit to purchase a handgun or firearms purchaser identification card before taking possession of an inherited firearm; estate administrators without valid credentials must surrender firearms to law enforcement within 30 days

If an heir or legatee cannot obtain proper credentials, they must sell the inherited firearm to a licensed retail dealer; those with valid credentials may take direct possession after filing a certification with local law enforcement or the superintendent
