Creates a new criminal offense for impersonating a first responder (law enforcement officer, firefighter, EMT, or rescue squad member) for the purpose of committing a crime while using that false identity.

Grades the offense one degree higher than the underlying crime committed, meaning a third-degree crime becomes second-degree, and a second-degree crime becomes first-degree.

Elevates disorderly persons or petty disorderly persons offenses to fourth-degree crimes when committed while impersonating a first responder.

Inspired by incidents in California where individuals impersonated firefighters during wildfire emergencies to commit crimes amid the chaos.

Supplements existing New Jersey law (N.J.S.A.2C:28-8) that already prohibits impersonating public servants or law enforcement officers.
