Municipalities with decommissioned nuclear power plants that store spent nuclear fuel onsite may impose an annual stranded nuclear waste fee on plant owners through local ordinance

The fee is calculated by multiplying the kilograms of spent nuclear fuel stored at the site by a per-kilogram rate set by the municipality, not to exceed $15.00 per kilogram

Revenue collected from the stranded nuclear waste fee must be used exclusively to reduce the municipal property tax levy

The bill applies to nuclear power plants that have ceased generating electricity but continue to store spent fuel that has not been reprocessed
