Electric public utilities must reimburse residential customers for spoiled food (up to $500) and the full cost of compromised medication when outages last more than 72 consecutive hours after a major event such as storms, floods, or earthquakes

Reimbursement requests over $250 for food or over $500 for medication require customers to submit an itemized list and proof of purchase with receipts

Utilities must develop an online reimbursement application system within 90 days of the law taking effect and process reimbursements within 30 days of receiving requests

Costs incurred by utilities for these reimbursements cannot be passed on to ratepayers

The Board of Public Utilities will establish application procedures and adopt rules for implementation
