New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) would establish a rebate program for residents and businesses purchasing zero-emission lawn equipment, funded through the societal benefits charge.

Rebates are tiered by purchase price: 25% of cost up to $50 max for equipment costing $250 or less; 25% up to $100 max for equipment $250-$500; and 25% up to $150 max for equipment over $500.

Zero-emission lawn equipment includes battery-powered or fuel cell devices such as lawn mowers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, trimmers, snow blowers, and power washers that produce no carbon dioxide emissions.

BPU must consider the environmental benefits of reducing gas-powered lawn equipment use when establishing the program and advertise rebate availability through the New Jersey Clean Energy Program channels.

Pre-filed for introduction in the 2026 legislative session, sponsored by Senator Raj Mukherji of Hudson County (District 32).
