All passenger automobiles manufactured in New Jersey after the bill's effective date (two years after enactment) must be equipped with rear-seat detection systems that detect unattended occupants after the engine is turned off

Detection systems must include auditory, visual, and haptic warnings to alert people both inside and outside the vehicle, and cannot be disabled, overridden, reset, or recalibrated

The Chief Administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will prescribe the functional design specifications for the required detection systems

The Chief Administrator may also require systems to notify nearby emergency response agencies and provide the vehicle's geographical location when an unattended occupant is detected

Vehicles manufactured before the law takes effect are exempt from the rear-seat detection system requirement
