The U.S. Postal Service was founded on July 26, 1775, with Benjamin Franklin as its first Postmaster General, making 2025 its 250th anniversary.

The postal system has grown from 75 post offices serving 4 million people in 1789 to over 31,000 post offices serving 342 million Americans, delivering 112 billion pieces of mail annually to 168 million addresses.

The USPS employs more than 500,000 career workers, including nearly 70,000 veterans, and operates over 33,000 retail locations serving 12 million people daily.

The resolution urges Congress to keep the USPS as a public institution serving every household regardless of geography, opposing privatization efforts that could lead to job cuts, post office closures, and higher postage rates.
