Resolution urges the U.S. Congress and President to enact the "Social Security Fairness Act," which would repeal two provisions of the Social Security Act: the government pension offset (GPO) and the windfall elimination provision (WEP)

The GPO, enacted in 1977, currently prevents 4,126 New Jersey retirees from collecting both their public pension and full Social Security benefits, with 9 out of 10 affected employees losing their entire spousal benefit

The WEP, enacted in 1983, reduces Social Security benefits for 22,689 New Jersey retirees who worked in jobs not covered by Social Security but later earned Social Security through other employment, costing affected retirees up to $587 per month

Provisions particularly impact members of the Police and Firemen's Retirement System of New Jersey and certain local retirement systems who dedicated careers to public service

Copies of the resolution would be transmitted to the President, Vice President, congressional leadership, and all New Jersey members of Congress
