Social media companies with at least 5 million worldwide account holders must provide New Jersey residents a 24-hour toll-free telephone number to report fraudulent account activity, including unauthorized access, to a live customer service representative.

Companies must publish the toll-free number and its purpose on email notifications about account security and prominently on their platform's homepage or help page.

Failure to comply constitutes a violation of New Jersey's Consumer Fraud Act, with penalties up to $10,000 for first offenses and $20,000 for subsequent offenses.

Additional enforcement measures include cease and desist orders from the Attorney General, punitive damages, and treble damages and costs awarded to injured parties.

The bill takes effect immediately upon enactment.
