Merchant acquirers must assign the International Organization for Standardization's firearms and ammunition merchant category code to firearms merchants in New Jersey beginning May 1, 2027.

Firearms merchants are defined as New Jersey businesses whose highest sales value comes from the combined sale of firearms, firearm accessories, or ammunition.

Violations carry a civil penalty of $10,000 per violation, plus injunctive relief and attorney's fees, with enforcement authority held exclusively by the Attorney General.

Violators have a 30-day cure period after receiving written notice from the Attorney General before civil action can be brought against them.

No private right of action is permitted under this legislation; only the state may enforce its provisions.
