New Jersey Historical Commission will establish a public design contest for a Declaration of Independence 250th Anniversary commemorative license plate, with the winning design selected in consultation with the Motor Vehicle Commission.

The commemorative plate costs $50 initially plus a $10 annual renewal fee, with one plate issued per vehicle to be displayed on the front only from January 1, 2026 through January 1, 2028.

Fees collected will fund the "Declaration of Independence 250th Anniversary License Plate Fund" after administrative costs, with proceeds supporting Revolutionary War site preservation throughout New Jersey.

The program requires a minimum of 500 completed applications before the Motor Vehicle Commission can begin producing plates, with private contributions up to $25,000 allowed to offset initial costs capped at $150,000 for computer programming.

The bill expires if the 500-application threshold is not met within 12 months of enactment.
