Developers subject to New Jersey's electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) requirements can comply by either meeting the existing parking space-based standards or demonstrating minimum total charging capacity in kilowatts at the site.

The Site Improvement Advisory Board must adopt statewide regulations within 12 months establishing charging capacity equivalency standards, minimum requirements based on development type, and accessibility and safety specifications.

Municipalities cannot impose EVSE requirements that conflict with or exceed the statewide alternative compliance standards, and cannot deny permits solely based on equipment type or charging speed if applicants meet the uniform standards.

Parking space credits for EVSE installation remain available under the alternative compliance method, but credits still cannot reduce total required parking by more than 10 percent.

The alternative compliance option does not modify underlying parking minimums or existing EVSE phasing timelines and takes effect only after implementing regulations are adopted.
