AI chatbots using generative artificial intelligence to provide election-related information or candidate details must display a clear, conspicuous disclosure identifying the content as generated by AI before delivering any such content.

Election-related information covered includes election dates, voter eligibility, registration processes, mail-in ballot procedures, polling locations and hours, ballot canvassing, and certification of results.

Disclosures must be permanent or difficult to remove by subsequent users, to the extent technically feasible.

Violations carry penalties of up to $6,000 for a first offense and up to $12,000 for second and subsequent offenses, imposed on the person or entity overseeing the chatbot.

The law takes effect 30 days after enactment and applies to elections for state, county, municipal, and school district offices in New Jersey.
