New Jersey Assembly resolution encourages higher education institutions to increase Hispanic and Latino representation in presidential and leadership positions through expanded leadership development programs and more diverse governing boards and search committees.

Hispanic and Latino students comprise approximately 20% of U.S. undergraduates and 25% in New Jersey, yet only 6% of college presidents nationwide identified as Hispanic or Latino in 2023, with just one Latino president currently in New Jersey.

The 2024 State of Higher Education report found 16% of Hispanic students felt disrespected, 14% felt discriminated against, and 42% had considered withdrawing from their postsecondary programs.

The resolution calls for institutions to engage with organizations dedicated to advancing Hispanic and Latino leaders and to reform hiring practices that create barriers to diverse candidates reaching presidential positions.

Copies of the resolution will be transmitted to the New Jersey Secretary of Higher Education, the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities, the New Jersey Council of County Colleges, and the U.S. Secretary of Education.
