School districts may employ safe schools resource officers or Class Three special law enforcement officers to provide security during school hours.

The State of New Jersey will fund the costs for districts that hire these security officers after the bill's effective date.

Districts employing school security personnel must enter into written agreements with local law enforcement agencies (or a State Police-designated entity if no municipal police exist) governing placement terms.

Required agreement provisions include chain of command, roles and responsibilities, work hours, qualifications, communication channels, training requirements, and firearm authority.

The bill takes effect immediately and becomes operative on the first day of the fourth month following enactment.
