Municipalities and school districts in New Jersey may contract with private vendors to install, operate, and maintain camera monitoring systems on school buses to capture vehicles illegally passing stopped buses

Violations captured by school bus monitoring systems carry a $250 civil penalty with no license points or insurance eligibility points assessed against the violator

Traditional violations (not captured by monitoring systems) carry a $250 fine plus up to 15 days community service for first offense, and $500 fine plus minimum 15 days community service for subsequent offenses

Law enforcement must review recorded images and issue summons within 90 days of the violation; all images not resulting in summons must be purged within 95 days of recording

Collected civil penalties go to the municipality where the violation occurred for general municipal and school district purposes, including public safety education programs
