Public school employees must notify the principal or designee when a student allegedly commits an assault upon another student on school property, on a school bus, or at a school-sponsored function.

Principals or their designees must immediately report such assault incidents to the appropriate law enforcement agency after receiving notification.

"Assault" is defined as attempting to cause or purposely, knowingly, or recklessly causing bodily injury to another person, per N.J.S.2C:12-1.

The bill was introduced in response to the death of Central Regional High School student Adriana Kuch, who committed suicide after being assaulted by four classmates in an incident the school did not report to police.

The bill takes effect immediately upon enactment.
