Portable solar generation devices with maximum output of 1,200 watts that connect through standard 120-volt outlets would be exempt from interconnection agreements and net metering program requirements under New Jersey law.

Electric utilities would be prohibited from requiring customers to obtain prior approval, pay fees, or install additional equipment for qualifying portable solar devices.

Devices must meet National Electrical Code standards and be certified by Underwriters Laboratories or equivalent testing laboratory to qualify for the exemption.

Electric utilities would receive liability protection from civil actions for damages or injuries caused by customer use of portable solar generation devices.

The bill takes effect six months after enactment, with the Board of Public Utilities authorized to take preparatory implementation actions in advance.
