Choice districts in second-class cities that have been directed by the New Jersey Supreme Court to desegregate must provide transportation for elementary students living more than 2 miles away and secondary students living more than 2.5 miles away, up to 20 miles from the student's residence.

Sending districts receive State transportation aid calculated under existing formulas and must pay that aid directly to the choice district providing the transportation.

Choice districts may receive supplemental State aid when their actual transportation costs exceed the State aid received from sending districts.

To qualify for supplemental aid, choice districts must demonstrate cost-efficient methods such as centralized pick-up/drop-off locations and multi-district bus routes.

Choice districts must annually report excess transportation costs to the Department of Education, which is required to reimburse those additional costs.
